WHO WE ARE

In 2023, Shelby County Cares grew out of a local effort to reduce firearm suicide in our community, grounded in a simple belief: no one should have to face life’s hardest moments alone. We saw that rebuilding community—restoring connection, purpose, and belonging—to be a powerful antidote to the loneliness and isolation so many of our friends and neighbors quietly endure.

As our suicide prevention work has grown, we’ve come to understand that the challenges around mental health in our community go far beyond access to care. They’re rooted in deeply interconnected issues like economic pressure, generational stress, and the erosion of community life itself. Our work now aims to address these root causes by strengthening the networks of care that help rural families and communities endure and thrive.

Our Mission

Promote the holistic well-being of farm families by increasing access to resources, challenging long-held stigma, and restoring the bonds of community and mutual care that defined our communities.

Our Vision

Farm families in Shelby County and beyond feel the same nourishment and abundance they provide our country and world.
